ONLINE PETITION LAUNCHED FOR RELEASE OF FILMMAKER HELD IN DUBAI

LISBON - A group representing Portugal's film directors has launched a petition drive urging Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, to grant clemency to a Portuguese documentary filmmaker charged last month with smoking marijuana in Dubai.

The online petition counted more than 1,800 signatures, including those of several Portuguese actors, directors, singers and members of parliament on Monday, less than 24 hours after it was launched.

"We are appealing to the great compassion and generosity of Your Highness and pleading for Your forgiveness in relation to the situation of our friend and colleague," it reads, referring to Shaikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Ivo Ferreira, who faces a four-year prison term if convicted, was arrested and jailed by Dubai police on April 5 at the apartment he shared with a friend after police received a tip that the two had smoked marijuana there the day before.

He says he took just two puffs of the marijuana cigarette that police found in the apartment.

Ferreira, 29, told police his roommate, who has also been charged, brought the marijuana into Dubai from Eygpt.  No trial date has been set.

Portugal's foreign ministry on Thursday sent Dubai a formal request for clemency for the filmmaker, who was working on a documentary in the Gulf state.

Dubai, one of seven emirates that make up the UAE, has a zero tolerance policy towards drug possession.  Smugglers face possible death sentences, but in practice executions are rare.
