POLICE HAIL NSW-QLD BORDER SWOOP

More than 170 people have been arrested on a total of 255 charges in a police operation on the Queensland-New South Wales border.

Officers from both states targeted back roads between Warwick and Byron Bay

Tweed Byron Police Commander, Supt Tim Tarlinton says charges related to stolen property, stock thefts and traffic offences.

He also says 133 drugs charges were laid against more than 80 people.

"We believe that it is higher than what we got last year," he said.

"The emphasis on the operation last year was slightly different so our expectation, even before we even started the operation, would increase more so than last year."

NSW police said last week they were increasing numbers for the weekend's 13th annual Nimbin "mardi grass" but would not take an aggressive approach.

The annual celebration of cannabis draws thousands of people.
