SEARCH FOR JUSTICE
I am writing in response to the article "Judge rules search unlawful"
[April 27]. I am without a doubt more confused, frustrated and
disillusioned with our justice system than ever before. I have a very hard
time understanding why one must have a search warrant when a vehicle is
being searched and evidence of drugs has been found. I admit I am far
beyond understanding the laws that govern this. I have never known a police
office to need a search warrant to search a car if it is believed the
driver is impaired and may have open alcohol in the car. Why is it okay to
seize alcohol and charge a person with impaired driving, but in order to
charge someone with drug trafficking the judge insists a search warrant is
needed? Where is the difference here? How does one ever learn from his or
her mistakes if there are no consequences for their actions taken?
The judge said his hands were tied--well, maybe it is time to untie them. I
fully support and hope that the RCMP appeal the judge's decision. As a
taxpayer I would fully support the RCMP more in an appeal than the money we
spend for Legal Aid in lawyer fees for suspected drug traffickers.
